I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends! I saved this post for you to read today as you’re emerging slowly from your food coma.

The last city we visited on our road trip was Portland, Maine. We had beautiful weather and drove straight to the downtown area and walked Roxy around by the water.

We grabbed lunch at The Porthole Resturant on their warfside deck. The lobster rolls did not disappoint! We walked around the downtown area for a while more until Roxy got tired. Then we got back in the car and headed for the Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse.

The view and sound of the water crashing on the rocks were perfectly relaxing. We walked around on the rocks for a while and enjoyed having the park area almost completely to ourselves. Then we headed back to Portland to our hotel.

After we settled Roxy into the hotel room we grabbed a cab and went back downtown to check out some of the pubs we’d seen earlier in the afternoon.

Our favorite spot in downtown Portland was Gritty McDuff’s Brew Pub. The beer was great, as was their lobster mac and cheese. Just typing that makes me want to go back immediately. We also purchased t-shirts from here and Kyle wears his quite often. He has received several comments on it in so many places that we’ve been, at the very least Hawaii and Dubai. Definitely don’t miss this pub!

The other breweries in Portland were either a bit too far outside of the downtown area for us to make it to in one night, or closed on the evening we were there. But there were plenty of other options for us to choose from.

I love the nautical feel of pretty much the entire northeast. Portland definitely embraces that to the fullest. Being from land-locked Arkansas, it was a really interesting way of life and I’m so glad I was able to see it while we lived on the east coast.

Roxy was quite tired of the car after this trip so we made sure she got plenty of outside time as soon as we got back home.

Here’s the entire trip we made – 28 hours total driving! From home, we went to the conference in Toronto, then to Burlington, then Portland before making our way back to Washington, DC.

No more road trips for now as we’re unable to drive outside of Kuwait. It would be really awesome if we could drive from here down to Bahrain, Qatar, or Dubai. Unfortunately, that’s not an option for us as American passport holders because it would require driving through Saudi Arabia.
